How to Rig a Fishing Outrigger to Your Center Console Boat

While there are many types of fishing boats on the market, center consoles are some of the most common. Center console boats feature a steering station in the middle of the vessel, with open space and sometimes seating surrounding it. These boats are popular due to their 360-degree access to the water, increased visibility, stability, and more – and all of these benefits make them a particularly great option for fishing enthusiasts.

However, if you want to improve the outcome of your fishing trips, it’s not enough to have the right boat; you’ll also need high-quality marine accessories. One of the most effective ways to increase your chances of reeling in a big one is rigging outriggers on your vessel.

Below, we’re discussing how to install an outrigger on your center console boat and the benefits you’ll enjoy in doing so. Let’s take a look!

Why Install an Outrigger on Your Center Console Boat?

Rather than simply casting and hoping to get a bite, many deep-sea fishermen use a method known as trolling, where fishing lines are dragged behind the boat as it moves through the water. Bait is attached to the lines to trick surrounding fish into thinking they’re chasing live prey.

Outriggers aid in this process by widening the trolling area, which helps to keep lines from getting tangled and allows you to run more at once. Additionally, these marine accessories keep your bait out of your boat’s wake, where fish typically avoid swimming. This also means that you’ll have a clearer view of where you’re casting, increasing your chances of getting a catch.

Some outriggers, like those offered by GemLux, can even be used to hold boat shades, creating an escape from the sun on long fishing trips. Overall, these accessories bring the advantages of a sportfishing boat to your center console, allowing you to get the most out of your time on the water.

If you want to enhance your center console boat with outriggers, it’s important to know how to set up an outrigger system. GemLux offers three high-quality outrigger options, the Bluewater Outrigger System, the Coastal Outrigger System, and the Deluxe Outrigger System. The Bluewater system is made from marine-grade stainless steel and deluxe carbon fiber and features our patented one-handle operation. The Coastal system is a lightweight, lower-cost option featuring stainless-steel bases and poles made from an affordable yet durable carbon-fiber blend. The Deluxe system improves upon the Bluewater system’s design, offering an even more efficient experience with added flexibility.

Follow these steps to ensure your outriggers are ready to help you reel in a big one:

Coastal Outrigger System Installation for Hardtops

  1. Clean the areas of the hardtop where you’ll be placing your outriggers.  Ensure the surface is completely dry before installation.
  2. Select an installation location, making sure there’s enough room for the system.
  3. Unscrew the Coastal Base handles into four separate components: handle, backing plate, baseplate, and Coastal Mount.
  4. Tape the top and bottom of the installation area to reduce the risk of chipping the fiberglass.
  5. Adhere the installation template (included with your system) to the hardtop. Drill through the center of the large hole, then drill the ¾-inch hole halfway through each side.
  6. Place a baseplate on the installation template and align the center holes. Then, place the Coastal Mount on the baseplate and insert the pins.
  7. Confirm the base’s alignment, fit, and stability and adjust as necessary.
  8. Remove the Coastal Base components and drill four holes for the mounting fasteners.
  9. Remove the installation template and tape, then place the baseplates on the hardtop. Ensure the black O-ring side is facing up and apply the backing plate under the canopy.
  10. Install the mounting fasteners from under the backing plate through the hardtop to the baseplate.
  11. Place Coastal Mounts on your baseplates, then clamp the whole system together by turning the handle underneath the canopy until it’s tight.

Bluewater Outrigger System Installation for Hardtops

  1. Clean the installation area and ensure it’s completely dry before moving on.
  2. Select an installation location that has plenty of room for the base.
  3. Place masking tape on the top and bottom of the installation area.
  4. Stick the included installation template to the hardtop. Then, drill all the way through the center hole and halfway through the 3¼-inch hole on either side.
  5. Slide the handle and lower half of the Bluewater Base through the center hole.
  6. Check the base’s alignment, fit, and stability and adjust as necessary. Rotate the handle to ensure there is enough room.
  7. Remove the base and drill four holes for the mounting fasteners.
  8. Remove the installation template and tape, then reinsert the outrigger base.
  9. Install the mounting fasteners through the backing plate to the Bluewater Base.

Deluxe Outrigger System Installation for Hardtops

  1. Clean the areas of the hardtop where you’ll be placing your outriggers and make sure the surface is dry before continuing.
  2. Select an installation location, ensuring there’s ample room for the system.
  3. Tape the top and bottom of the installation area on the hardtop.
  4. Place the installation template (included with your system) on the hardtop. Drill through the center of the large hole and halfway through the ¾-inch hole on each side.
  5. Slide the handle and lower half of the base through the center hole.
  6. Confirm the base’s alignment, fit, and stability. Adjust as necessary.
  7. Remove the base and drill four holes for the mounting fasteners.
  8. Remove the installation template and tape, then reinsert the outrigger bases.
  9. Install the mounting fasteners under the canopy, through the backing plate, and to the Deluxe Base.

No matter what system you’re setting up, be sure to don the necessary personal protective equipment and allow any sealants to dry completely before using your outriggers. Additionally, if you’re installing outriggers on a soft-top canopy, you’ll need to invest in reinforced brackets or mounting plates.
